TEMA
(acronym in Portuguese for
Training Counseling Ministry Teams)

TEMA exists to capacitate and provide spiritual covering for counseling teams in local churches.  The training it provides is worthwhile for all leaders involved informally in helping people understand themselves and make decisions, such as pastoral leaders, small group leaders, and leaders of other ministries that are involved in counseling (such as couples ministry or Restoration ministry).  It can remove a lot of weight from the pastor in this area.  Although the ministry is only active in Brazil, we hope the information below in the area of counseling can be useful to you as you adapt it to your context.  For more information in English about TEMA, you can contact Rachel Kornfield.  If you speak Portuguese, you can contact the ministry’s leader, Maria José D. dos Reis, or its executive secretary, Patrícia Neves

The TEMA training seminar, as it is done in Brazil, normally lasts 12-14 hours.  It usually occurs over a weekend: 8 hours on Saturday, and 4-6 hours on Sunday.  Participants follow up through an 11 week study of Gary Collins’ book How to be a People Helper, as well as practicing the counseling model learned in the seminar.
