An Exercise in Hearing from God with Others

You should adapt this exercise to your reality and modify the details for different contexts.

  1. Begin with five minutes of silence. Each person should ask God to show them a Bible verse or short passage that expresses his purposes for the group or situation.
  2. After the five minutes are up, the leader/facilitator indicates that whoever so desires can read their passage . They should make sure to mention where it is found in the Bible.  The person who read the passate should not say anything further about it.  Instead, other group members should comment about the passage or pray about themes it brings up.
  3. Everyone who wants to should read their passage, followed by prayer and commentary by other group members.  Hopefully in this way, one or more Spirit-directed themes will become clear.
  4. At the end of the time of hearing from God, the leader/facilitator can summarize the theme or themes they sense the Spirit is highlighting.
